Nature Study: Aspen Forests

ns_aspen_forestsOne of our favorite Nature Study hikes to do in September and October are walks through aspen forests. Only the Lord could create such vivid colors – the Colorado sky is bright blue, the trunks are stark white and black, and the leaves turn a golden yellow.

Picture 669We enjoyed hiking several trails at different altitudes to compare the colors of the trees. The trees at 12,000 feet were golden, while down at 9,000 feet we walked under trees that were still green.

Some of the aspens even turned orange or red. This reservoir was crystal clear and we had fun watching the fish swimming around.Picture 664

Nearer to our feet we saw beautiful fall colors on the forest floor. Picture 661

Some of the aspen leaves were covered in brown spots. The trees with the spots seemed to loose their leaves sooner.Picture 660

The kids had fun crunching their feet through the fallen leaves.Picture 653

Picture 650I love the sounds of fall… gentle breezes blowing the aspen leaves in the forest, the crunching of dry leaves, and the laughter of my three little ones. The bright colors were truly a delight to our eyes and souls. We are so thankful to get to enjoy these wonderful aspen forests and live within the wonder and beauty of God’s creation.

“You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12

  1. Hi there! I just clicked on your blog link through the SCM forums. I just had to tell you what a lovely family you have! It looks like you are making amazing memories with your children and being a wonderful momma. Cherish these days! They grow up so fast. My babies are 20 & 13 now and it seems like yesterday that we were having tea parties like yours.
    God bless,

    • Melanie, thank you so much for the encouragement and the reminder to keep cherishing these sweet years with young ones. I appreciate you stopping by!

    • Thank you! I hope you’ll get to pass through the Rocky Mountains and see those beautiful trees at some point.
      They really are breathtaking!
